The Lieutenant Governor's 2018 Junior High Essay Contest - From Farm Beginnings to Future Harvests

 

Thank you to eveyone who submitted essays and congratulations to all those who won the random draw for seats on the vintage train excursions with the Lieutenant Governor. All winners have been notified and the contest is now closed. 

Her Honour, the Honourable Lois Mitchell has launched an educational opportunity for students in Grades 7–9 across the province: the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s Junior High School 2018 Agriculture Essay Contest.

This is an opportunity to think about  Alberta’s agricultural pioneers, about the important connections between our land and water and the food we eat, and on how the land will continue to be important for generations to come. The contest is open to Alberta schools and 4-H club. Essays can be submitted in English or French.

Essays should be 400-500 words long, They can cover agriculture, ranching or caring for the land and can be focused on the past, present or future but should fall within one of five themes:  

  1. Farm Beginnings

  2. The United Farmers of Alberta

  3. Growing Our Potential

  4. Agricultural Innovation and Inspiration

  5. Future Harvest

The closing date for entires is May 16, 2018. Each participating classroom or club will choose their top three essays to submit to the contest and winners will be chosen by draw from all those submitted.

The winners in each Grade level will be invited to join the Lieutenant Governor on one of two special vintage train excursions in June 2018 on the Aspen Crossing and Alberta Prairie Railways.  Everyone who submits an essay and every school or club that participates will also receive a certificate of appreciation from the Lieutenant Governor.

Her Honour is looking forward to learning from everyone's essays...whether it's discovering new stories from Alberta's agricultural history or considering thoughts and ideas about the future.
