Statement from Lieutenant Governor Donald S. Ethell

Over the past week, Her Honour and I have been in Calgary where we have witnessed the devastation brought by the unprecedented flooding in Southern Alberta. Our hearts go out to all those who have suffered losses and particularly those who are mourning victims of the flood. Please know that Linda and I are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Our concern for our fellow Albertans has been equaled only by our pride in how the people of our great province have responded to these extraordinary circumstances. The tremendous compassion and the strength of community demonstrated by all, neighbours and strangers alike, offers a powerful example of the Alberta spirit. People have been reaching out to help in whatever way they are able, and with the knowledge that there is no challenge we can’t overcome together as a province. It is that same spirit and sense of determination that will carry us successfully through the months of rebuilding that lie ahead.

This emergency has also reminded us of the strength that comes from our greater family of fellow Canadians. I have spoken to the Governor General of Canada and His Excellency has conveyed his heartfelt concern and support for our province. I know that His Excellency echoes the thoughts of so many Canadians who have been watching with concern as the situation has unfolded. The outpouring of support has been a source of comfort to all affected.

Thank you to our hard-working Premier and her the determined municipal leaders who have been operating on little if any the courageous emergency responders and military units mobilized to provide support...and to the legions of caring volunteers who have reached out to help. Our province is safe in your capable hands and I know that, together, Albertans will come through this emergency even stronger than we were before.
