2018 Agriculture Essay Contest

This new contest for 2018 challenges Alberta students in Grades 7-9 to reflect on the legacy of Alberta's agricultural pioneers, on the vital connection between our land and water and the food we eat, and on the role the land will continue to play in the well-being of future generations.The contest is open to Alberta classrooms and 4-H clubs. The deadline for submissions is May 16.

SPIRIT of Vimy

Lieutenant Governor Mitchell's SPIRIT of Vimy program fostered awareness of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the First World War battle often described as marking the birth of Canada as a nation. The program invited young Albertans to learn about Vimy Ridge and explore what the SPIRIT of Vimy means to them. The winning  videos were celebrated at an event in Edmonton on March 25, 2017.

Canada 150

On July 1, 2017, Canada turned 150! Lieutenant Governor Mitchell held a Canada 150 Poetry Contest for Alberta Grade 4 to 6 classrooms to encourage young Albertans to learn about our history while building their writing skills.

2018 Agriculture Poetry Contest

Lieutenant Governor Mitchell has launched a new poetry contest for 2018, focused on agricultural leaders throughout Alberta's history. The contest is open to Grade 4-6 classrooms as well as 4-H clubs. The contest opens January 11, 2018 and closes May 5, 2018.

Celebrating our Flag

The National Flag of Canada turned 50 in 2015. To mark the milestone, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor created a short film that shows Albertans' love for our maple leaf. The film premiered at the New Year's Day Levee at Government House in Edmonton on January 1, 2016.

April 19, 2016 marked the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage in Alberta.To celebrate the occasion, the Office of the Lieutenant Governorpartnered with the Legislative Assembly, Visitor Services on Voices for the Vote, an exhibit at the Borealis Gallery in Edmonton and other programs.
