Asian Heritage Month 2021

As we mark Asian Heritage Month, I am reminded that the extraordinary contributions offered through the decades by people of Asian descent have been as diverse as Asian Canadians themselves. These dedicated citizens represent the rich cultural, linguistic and religious traditions of a vast area that spans East, South, West and Southeast Asia. Their lasting contributions to our country have been equally far-reaching, covering virtually every field of endeavour from health care, science and industry…to business, education and community service…to sports, entertainment and the arts.

As Her Majesty the Queen’s representative in Alberta, I offer my heartfelt thanks to the countless talented and hardworking Asian Canadians who have shaped our history to date. That includes my distinguished predecessor, the late Honourable Norman Kwong, who was the first person of Asian heritage to serve this office. Every single one of our Asian Canadian pioneers have played a meaningful role in building our province and country. I encourage everyone to learn more about this fascinating part of our shared story, and I hope that this month will inspire the next generation of Asian Canadian trailblazers to think about what they can do to build on such a proud legacy.

Her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani AOE, B.Sc., Lieutenant Governor of Alberta
