Welcome Message
It is a true privilege to serve as our Province's 16th Lieutenant Governor. I am honoured to represent Her Majesty the Queen and the people of the province of Alberta, and to celebrate everything that makes Alberta special — its heritage, its land, its people, and our spirit and pride in our province.
As Lieutenant Governor, I have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities and meet people from across Alberta and around the world. Although I attend many different events, I am particularly focused on using my time in office on four areas: encouraging a healthy and balanced lifestyle for Albertans; supporting organizations that advance multiculturalism; championing active community involvement for seniors; and promoting active citizenship.
Balanced living
I strongly believe that a healthy and balanced lifestyle is key to living a rich and full life. Daily activity is something we can all do, at any level of fitness and any age. The trick is to find something you love to do… and then start moving. I also appreciate the many benefits of sports participation. My own involvement in amateur and professional sports brought huge benefits to my personal and professional life; I learned self-confidence, discipline, responsibility, and the value of friendships. A fit body not only improves the mind — it enriches the spirit.
Multiculturalism
Growing up as a member of a visible minority, I understand the challenges faced by immigrants, particularly immigrant youth. I believe that we all have a lot to gain from sharing our stories and perspectives and I am encouraged by the work taking place across Alberta to build bridges of understanding between peoples of different cultures and philosophies.
Seniors
As a member of an aging segment of society, I am highly motivated to promote the special needs of senior citizens. It's important for seniors to remain as physically, mentally, and socially active as possible. No matter our age, we all have something special to contribute.
Citizenship
My wife, Mary, and I greatly enjoy meeting with young Albertans and seeing their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning. I have been working to promote young Albertans' awareness of the role of Lieutenant Governors in Canada's system of government… and to encourage our youngest citizens to be active and engaged members of their communities.
